Raith Rovers v Queen’s Park

Match Preview

There’s an old saying that “things can only get better” and the Spiders faithful will certainly hope that rings true over the coming fortnight. For that to happen tomorrow against Raith Rovers though will take a monumental effort with Starks Park proving to be a fortress for the Fife side this season. Our opponents have dropped only four points at home all season, winning 14 and drawing the other two of their 16 matches so far, stats which hammer how just how tough a task Gus’ side will have in Kirkcaldy.

Ahead of the match the club media team spoke to the gaffer to get his thoughts. Starting with a quick reflection on last weekend’s defeat at home to East Fife Gus said: “It was an extremely frustrating and disappointing afternoon. We were forced into a number of changes and it took us 20-30 minutes to settle down, by which point we found ourselves 2-0 down, to soft goals yet again.

“We gave ourselves a lifeline with the goal just before half time and we then started the second half in excellent form and on the front foot. Our play was very positive and we got ourselves level through a fantastic David Galt finish.

“At that point you’re thinking you’ve done the hard bit in getting level, and we looked like going on to score again but we never finished the chances or the game off in the manner in which we should have. We then lost another soft goal from our point of view and unfortunately that’s a position we’ve found ourselves in on too many occasions before.”

Turning his thoughts to the Raith Rovers game he said: “Everyone knows just how though this game is going to be. Their home record and league position speaks for itself. From our perspective it’s important that we dust ourselves down and forget about last week. We go there with a job to do and everyone knows what is at stake.

“First and foremost, we need to make sure we are competitive, something which we have done more often than not this season. I would fully expect Raith Rovers to gives us the utmost respect as their challenge in terms of looking to get promoted, is as great a challenge as ours to avoid relegation is.

“The positive news from our point of view is that Aidan Keena is fit and available despite having gone off against East Fife last Saturday. Adam Cummins returns to the squad following his suspension but as everyone can see, we remain very stretched at the back. Gerry McLauchlan misses out and we were already without the services of Daniel Nimmo and Cammy Foy.”

The opposition: The Starks Park men go into the game comfortably clear in second place and while not out of the title race just yet, last week’s 1-1 draw away to Arbroath left them five points behind league leaders Ayr United.
