For the second time in a fortnight Mark Roberts’ Spiders side are faced with a tricky away midweek tie, this time with a trip across the border to take on Berwick Rangers at Shielfield Park at Tuesday night. One thing is for sure, the gaffer will be hoping for a more positive outcome than we achieved at Borough Briggs a fortnight ago when with fifteen minutes to play a two-goal lead was thrown away.

Ahead of the Berwick match Mark spoke to the club media team to give his thoughts, acknowledging that unlike recent games where his team have gone in as underdogs, there is increased expectation on the players for this match.

He said: “I know to a lot of folk we will be slight favourites going into this game, particularly on the back of the result the last time the sides played each other, however the players have been warned in no uncertain terms, that this will an entirely different type of game. We’re expecting Berwick to be right up for the fight given the situation they find themselves in and they’ll be looking for revenge for the result the last time.

“From our perspective it’s vital that we look to start the game in the way we started against Edinburgh City on Saturday. I thought our shape was very good and we contained the threat that Edinburgh City posed up until some poor defending on our part cost us. Even at 1 down we held our shape well, but we just didn’t pose enough of a threat in front of goal and when we went down to ten men, we were always going to be up against it.

“The onus will be on us to take the game to Berwick and look to cause them problems. It goes without saying but we need to take chances that come our way. It’s also vital that we are stronger at the back and seek to cut out the silly mistakes which have cost us dearly on too many occasions. We have the players capable of hurting teams and it’s important we play to our strengths, which in my opinion is taking games to the opposition and not setting up to stop opposing teams play.

“The most important thing for me between now and the end of the season is working hard to turn the half decent performances and draws into wins.

“I feel that the system we have been utilising of late can work for us and we do have the players that can be versatile and adopt to various positions if required. It’s likely that we’ll make a couple of changes against Berwick, one of which is enforced with Alan Gow being suspended. Ciaran Summers is fit again after coming off at the break on Saturday and I’ll be bringing young Michael Ruth into the squad.

“Between now and the end of the season I hope to have the opportunity to be giving Michael, and Steven Bradley, an increasing amount of game time.”

Stats Life

The opposition: The Wee Gers go into the game occupying ninth spot in the table, two points ahead of bottom side Albion Rovers. They go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Cowdenbeath at Shielfield on Saturday. Calum Adamson had given Johnny Harvey’s side the lead in the 24th minute but that was short lived as the Blue Brazil drew level just after the half hour mark, ensuring a share of the spoils.
