QUEEN’S PARK fell to a second consecutive 5-0 defeat as Airdrie left Hampden with three points in the William Hill Championship.

Livingston produced something special in front of goal to defeat Steven MacLean’s side in Sunday’s SPFL Trust Trophy Final and three of the Diamonds’ goals were from the top drawer too, rubbing salt into the wounds of the Spiders.

Cup-tied duo Leon King and Adam Devine were back for the home team after sitting out on Sunday, and Aiden McGinlay was awarded his full debut under the lights at the National Stadium.

The teenager shone brightest in the first half with some positive runs, particularly on the left side – and was unlucky with a confident strike from the edge of the box that went wide.

At the other end though, the visitors were on point.

The Spiders had started with some intent after Sunday’s disappointment, with Roddy MacGregor leading the charge from midfield.

However Airdrie went ahead from a corner, nodded in by Mason Hancock, who rose highest to meet the cross after Callum Ferrie had made a good save to deny an Adam Frizell snapshot after 12 minutes.

Queen’s attempts at a response were snuffed out – Jack Turner finding the ball stuck under his feet and blocked after an Adam Devine cut-back. Then Leon King and Adam Montgomery entered Don Robertson’s book for two midfield tackles as the Spiders scrambled to gain something back.

They fell further behind two minutes later.

Rocco Diack beat Ferrie with a brilliant curling free-kick from 25 yards, moments after firing over the bar.

It was to get worse before it got better for Queen’s as Hancock crafted his second of the game, two minutes before the interval.

After a one-two with Liam McStravick, who picked out his blind-side run inside the left channel, the defender shuffled around Ferrie and tapped in his team’s third of the first-half.

Half-time brought three Queen’s Park substitutes – and an early vigour.

Turner headed a Devine corner just wide but attempts to claw back the deficit were undone on the break when Chris Mochrie seized possession in midfield and raced in on Ferrie

The Spiders stopper made the save but Diack was following in to tuck in the rebound after 57 minutes.

Provider turned scorer as Mochrie netted number five on the 70th minute, finishing off a series of neat passes and flicks from the visitors.

Late drives from Duncan, Turner and Rudden were charged down as Queen’s fell to defeat and failed to score for the second game in a row.
Attentions now turn to the weekend where a visit to meet Livingston for the second time in six days awaits on Saturday.
